Worksheet illustration

Section A: Pythagoras’ Theorem

Success criteria: I can identify the hypotenuse, choose the correct formula, show working and round my answer correctly.

Reminder: a² + b² = c², where c is the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse is opposite the right angle.

Use a calculator in degree mode when needed. Round lengths to 1 decimal place and angles to the nearest degree unless stated otherwise.

1. A right-angled triangle has perpendicular sides of 6 cm and 8 cm. Find the hypotenuse.

Clearly labelled description: the 6 cm and 8 cm sides meet at the right angle.

2. A right-angled triangle has legs of 9 m and 12 m. Find the hypotenuse.
3. A right-angled triangle has legs of 5.5 cm and 7.2 cm. Find the hypotenuse.
4. The hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is 13 cm and one shorter side is 5 cm. Find the other shorter side.
5. The hypotenuse is 10 m and one shorter side is 6 m. Find the other shorter side.
6. The hypotenuse is 17 cm and one shorter side is 8 cm. Find the other shorter side.

Section B: Trigonometry

Reminder: SOHCAHTOA: sin θ = opposite/hypotenuse, cos θ = adjacent/hypotenuse, tan θ = opposite/adjacent. Use inverse trig for missing angles.

7. In a right triangle, θ = 35° and the hypotenuse is 12 cm. The opposite side is missing. Find its length.

Identify the opposite, adjacent and hypotenuse before choosing a ratio.

8. In a right triangle, θ = 42° and the adjacent side is 8 m. Find the hypotenuse.
9. In a right triangle, θ = 28° and the opposite side is 7 cm. Find the adjacent side.
10. In a right triangle, θ = 63° and the hypotenuse is 15 m. Find the adjacent side.
11. The opposite side is 9 cm and the adjacent side is 12 cm. Find θ.
12. The adjacent side is 14 m and the hypotenuse is 20 m. Find θ.
13. The opposite side is 11 cm and the hypotenuse is 18 cm. Find θ.
14. The opposite side is 5 m and the adjacent side is 9 m. Find θ.

Section C: Applications and Challenges

Draw a labelled right triangle for each problem. Include units in your final answer.

15. A 5.0 m ladder rests against a vertical wall. Its foot is 1.2 m from the wall. How high up the wall does it reach?
16. A straight ramp is 6.0 m long and rises 1.5 m. Find the angle of elevation of the ramp.
17. At a particular time, a 4.5 m shadow is cast by a vertical post. The angle of elevation of the Sun is 38°. Find the height of the post.
18. From the top of a 30 m tower, the angle of depression to a car is 35°. Assuming level ground, find the horizontal distance from the tower to the car.

Challenge: Choose the method

Decide whether Pythagoras or trigonometry is more suitable. Explain your choice briefly.

19. A roof section forms a right triangle with perpendicular sides of 4.0 m and 7.0 m. Find the angle between the 4.0 m side and the sloping roof.
20. A rectangular sign has a diagonal of 13 cm and a width of 5 cm. Find its length.

Answer Key

1. c = √(6² + 8²) = 10.0 cm.

2. c = √(9² + 12²) = 15.0 m.

3. c = √(5.5² + 7.2²) = 9.1 cm.

4. Missing side = √(13² − 5²) = 12.0 cm.

5. Missing side = √(10² − 6²) = 8.0 m.

6. Missing side = √(17² − 8²) = 15.0 cm.

7. Opposite = 12 sin 35° = 6.9 cm.

8. Hypotenuse = 8 ÷ cos 42° = 10.8 m.

9. Adjacent = 7 ÷ tan 28° = 13.2 cm.

10. Adjacent = 15 cos 63° = 6.8 m.

11. θ = tan⁻¹(9 ÷ 12) = 37°.

12. θ = cos⁻¹(14 ÷ 20) = 46°.

13. θ = sin⁻¹(11 ÷ 18) = 38°.

14. θ = tan⁻¹(5 ÷ 9) = 29°.

15. Height = √(5² − 1.2²) = 4.8 m.

16. θ = sin⁻¹(1.5 ÷ 6) = 14°.

17. Height = 4.5 tan 38° = 3.5 m.

18. Distance = 30 ÷ tan 35° = 42.8 m.

19. Use trigonometry: θ = tan⁻¹(7 ÷ 4) = 60°.

20. Use Pythagoras: length = √(13² − 5²) = 12.0 cm.
