A food truck is preparing snacks for a community sports day. Solve each challenge. Simplify fractions where possible, and show your working for calculations.

Build the fraction toolkit

Use what you know about parts of a whole to get the food truck ready.

1.The truck cuts a tray into 10 equal pieces. It sells 7 pieces. In the fraction 7/10, identify the numerator and denominator, and say what each number tells you.

2.A drink dispenser is 3/4 full. Which statement correctly explains the denominator?

The dispenser has 3 equal parts in total.
The dispenser is divided into 4 equal parts, and 3 are full.

3.A fruit platter has 12 equal pieces. Five pieces are melon. Write the fraction of the platter that is melon, then write the fraction that is not melon.

Equivalent fractions name the same amount, even when the pieces are divided differently.

Add up the orders

For fractions with different denominators, first rename them with a common denominator.

8.One order includes 3/8 of a wrap and another includes 2/8 of a wrap. How much wrap is that altogether?

9.Hudson pours 1/2 of a jug of lemon drink, then adds another 1/4 of a jug. How much of the jug has she poured? Show how you rename the fractions.

10.A fruit cooler uses 1/3 of a bottle of syrup and then 1/6 more. Calculate the total amount of syrup used. Simplify your answer.

11.The team has used 2/5 of a bag of flour in the morning and 1/5 in the afternoon. Is more than half the bag used? Calculate the total and justify your answer.
