Year 6 Inference Challenge
📚 Part 1: Read Between the Lines
WALT: We Are Learning To make thoughtful inferences by combining clues from a text with our own knowledge.
Success criteria: I can identify clues, explain what they suggest and support my ideas with evidence from the text.
Dyslexia-friendly options: Ask someone to read the passage aloud, use a ruler or piece of paper to track each line, or read one paragraph at a time.
The Last Light
By late afternoon, the beach was almost empty. Mia stood beside the locked surf club, watching the waves fold over themselves. In her pocket, the brass key felt heavier than it had that morning.
“You don’t have to go in,” said Arlo. He glanced at the darkening sky. The weather report had promised clear conditions, but a long smear of purple cloud had appeared above the horizon.
Mia looked at the club’s windows. Inside, rows of surfboards leaned against the wall. On the noticeboard, a photograph showed her mum and Dad standing beside the old rescue boat. Dad’s smile was wide, but Mum’s eyes were fixed on the sea.
“They left the emergency radio here,” Mia said. “If the storm reaches the bay, the younger children at the campsite won’t know what to do.”
Arlo pointed towards the headland. A single yellow light blinked twice, then disappeared. Mia’s fingers tightened around the key.
“That’s the lighthouse signal,” she whispered. “Something’s wrong.”
For a moment, neither of them moved. Then Mia pushed the key into the lock. It resisted. She tried again, leaning her whole weight against the door until it gave way with a groan.
Inside, the air smelled of salt and dust. Mia found the radio beneath a pile of old flags. As she lifted it, thunder rolled far out at sea. Arlo switched on the torch, and Mia began turning the radio dial.
✏️ Part 2: Prove Your Inference
Remember: A strong answer explains both what you think and which clues helped you think it.
🌟 Part 3: Challenge and Support
Differentiation strategies: You may highlight clues in different colours, discuss each question with a partner before writing, or use the sentence starter: “I infer that… because the text says…”
Self-check: I used evidence from the text.
I explained my thinking. I checked that my inference was reasonable.About This Worksheet
