The Snow-Fort Signal

On a December Saturday, Aria and Benjamin hurried outside after breakfast. Overnight, a thick blanket of snow had covered their backyard. Their plan was to build a fort before the afternoon snow began. Aria packed snow into a red bucket to make sturdy blocks. Benjamin stacked the blocks in a low wall, leaving a small doorway. When the wall began to lean, he pushed a flat board against it like a brace. The fort stood firm. Just then, a red cardinal landed on the fence. Aria noticed that the bird was pecking at an empty feeder. She fetched a handful of seeds from the porch and filled it. The cardinal fluttered down to eat. The children had one pine branch left. Instead of using it for the fort, Benjamin planted it beside the doorway as a signal flag. When the first flakes started to fall, Aria and Benjamin packed up their tools. Their fort was ready, the cardinal had food, and they had a good reason to come back outside tomorrow.
