Sustainable Farming Roleplay Cards

Work in a group of four. Choose or deal out one role card to each person. Take turns speaking in role, listen without interrupting, and respond to something another person has said. Use full sentences and try to include words such as crop rotation, compost, biodiversity, soil health, water conservation and renewable energy. Finish by agreeing on one practical idea for a more sustainable farm.

Roleplay prompt cards

Choose one card each. Read its role and opening statement aloud, then use the prompt to get the conversation started. You can agree, disagree politely, ask a question or suggest a compromise.

FARMER You want the farm to produce enough food and earn a fair living. Say: “Healthy soil helps us grow good crops year after year.” Discuss: Which change could your farm try first: crop rotation, composting or using less water? Explain why.

BEEKEEPER You keep bees and want more wild insects to thrive nearby. Say: “Bees need flowers and safe places to live.” Discuss: What could the farm do to help pollinators while still protecting crops?

LOCAL SHOPKEEPER You sell food to families in the nearby community. Say: “People want fresh food they can afford.” Discuss: How could a farm supply local shops and reduce food waste?

RIVER CARE VOLUNTEER You help look after a stream beside the farm. Say: “Clean water matters to people, wildlife and farms.” Discuss: What steps could help stop soil or farm chemicals reaching the stream?

FARM SCIENTIST You study ways to improve soil and crops. Say: “A farm can grow food and care for nature at the same time.” Discuss: How might crop rotation or compost improve soil health?

RENEWABLE ENERGY ADVISER You help farms explore cleaner energy. Say: “The right energy choice depends on the farm and its needs.” Discuss: Where might solar or wind energy be useful on a farm? What might the farmer need to consider?

YOUNG CUSTOMER You care about the future and want to know how food is grown. Say: “I want to know that my food is produced responsibly.” Discuss: What would you ask a farmer about protecting wildlife or saving water?

FARM NEIGHBOUR You live near the farm and value both local jobs and a healthy environment. Say: “Good farming should work well for the community too.” Discuss: How could the farm listen to neighbours and balance different needs?

Listen, respond and reflect

After the roleplay, answer these questions. Use a specific idea from your discussion where you can.

1.Choose one suggestion you heard. Say who suggested it, then explain how it could help the farm or its community.

2.Write a question you could ask the farmer to find out whether a proposed change would work in practice.

3.Complete this sentence with a response that politely disagrees and gives a reason: “I understand your idea, but I think … because …”

4.Your group can recommend only one first action: make compost, plant a wildflower strip or install solar panels. Which do you choose, and what is one reason for your choice?
