The Lighthouse Lunch

Each morning, Mrs Doyle packed a lunch for her husband, Tom, who worked in a lighthouse on a small island. She placed the food in a covered basket and hooked it onto a wire that stretched across the water to Tom. One windy morning, Tom watched the basket glide towards him. Before he could reach it, two hungry seagulls swooped down. They pecked at the sandwiches and carried away the last biscuit. Tom told Mrs Doyle what had happened. Together, they made a plan. The next day, Mrs Doyle put a friendly cat called Pip in the basket. Pip curled up under a blanket as the basket travelled over the water. When the seagulls flew close, Pip sat up and gave a loud meow. The birds flapped away in a hurry. Tom safely lifted out his lunch, and Pip enjoyed a treat too. From then on, the lunch reached the lighthouse without a single sandwich going missing.
