ANZAC Day Reading Comprehension
📖 Reading Text: ANZAC Day in New Zealand
What is ANZAC Day?
ANZAC Day is observed on 25th April each year in New Zealand and Australia. It is one of our most important national days of remembrance. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, which was formed during World War One.
The Gallipoli Campaign
On 25th April 1915, thousands of young Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on the beaches of Gallipoli in Turkey. They were fighting alongside British forces against the Ottoman Empire. The campaign was meant to last only a few days, but it continued for eight long months. Many brave soldiers lost their lives, including over 2,700 New Zealanders.
The ANZAC Spirit
Even though the Gallipoli campaign was not successful, it showed the courage, mateship, and determination of the ANZAC soldiers. These qualities became known as the "ANZAC spirit." The soldiers looked after each other and never gave up, even in the most difficult situations.
How We Remember
Today, New Zealanders honour all those who have served our country in times of war and peace. We attend dawn services at war memorials, march in parades, and wear red poppies as a symbol of remembrance. The red poppy reminds us of the flowers that grew on the battlefields after World War One.
ANZAC Day Today
ANZAC Day is not a celebration of war, but a day to remember the sacrifice of those who served our country. It brings communities together to reflect on the cost of war and the importance of peace. Schools, families, and organisations across New Zealand take part in ceremonies to ensure we never forget their service.
