Part A: Read the science

At the coast, Zoe finds an ice cube melting beside a glass of water. Ice and liquid water are both made from water molecules. Each molecule has a fixed composition. An atom is a tiny building block of matter. It has a nucleus containing protons and usually neutrons, with electrons moving around the nucleus. In a solid such as ice, particles are close together and vibrate in place. When ice warms, its particles gain energy and move enough to slide past one another: the solid melts into a liquid. In liquid water, particles remain close but can move around. If water is heated enough, particles gain still more energy and spread out as water vapour, a gas. Cooling reverses these changes: gas can condense into liquid, and liquid can freeze into solid. During an ordinary change of state, the particles themselves do not turn into different atoms; their movement and arrangement change.
