Bilingual PE Persuasive Letter

A school netball tournament is coming up, and the student council is reviewing the weekly timetable. Write a persuasive letter to the principal arguing for or against having PE every school day. Persuasive writing aims to influence a reader. Three useful appeals are credibility (可信度: showing relevant knowledge), emotion (情感: connecting with feelings), and logic (逻辑: giving sensible reasons or evidence).

Plan both sides

A persuasive letter is stronger when it considers the reader’s likely concerns. You can argue either for or against daily PE; support your view rather than trying to guess a single correct opinion.

6.Write your position on daily PE and give one clear reason. Begin with a sentence starter such as “I believe…”, “In my view…” or “Imagine if…”.

7.Add a credibility appeal: write one relevant piece of knowledge or a careful, checkable fact that could support your position. Do not invent a statistic.

8.Add an emotional appeal connected to the netball tournament. Describe how a student might feel, and explain why that feeling matters.

9.Add a logic appeal. Give a practical reason or consequence that supports your position, and acknowledge one possible drawback or concern.

Draft your persuasive letter

Organise your letter so the principal can follow your thinking: greeting and position; supporting reasons; a response to a concern; and a respectful conclusion. Use paragraphs and linking words such as firstly, furthermore, however and therefore.

10.Write your persuasive letter to the principal. State whether you support daily PE, include at least two developed reasons, use credibility, emotion and logic, address a concern, and finish with a clear request or conclusion. Use a suitable greeting and sign-off; do not include your real name.

11.Edit your draft. Tick each statement that is true, then correct anything you have missed: my position is clear; each reason supports it; I used paragraphs and linking words; capitals and punctuation are correct; spelling and meaning are checked; my tone is respectful.
