Butterfly Reading Comprehension
🦋 Reading Passage: Amazing Butterflies
Read this passage carefully, then answer the questions below.
Butterflies are beautiful insects that live all around the world, including here in Aotearoa New Zealand. They have four colourful wings that help them fly from flower to flower. Butterflies use their long, thin tongue called a proboscis to drink sweet nectar from flowers.
Most butterflies have bright colours on their wings like orange, yellow, red, and blue. These bright colours help warn birds and other animals that butterflies might taste bad. Butterflies also use their colours to find other butterflies like themselves.
In New Zealand, we have special native butterflies like the Copper butterfly and the Red Admiral. These butterflies are taonga (treasures) that we need to protect. Butterflies help our gardens and native plants by moving pollen from flower to flower as they feed.
During winter, many butterflies rest or hide under leaves and bark. When spring comes, they become active again and start looking for flowers and mates.
