Worked example

Beginning: Mia finds a tiny dragon in the school garden.

Middle: The dragon sneezes and accidentally sets the leaves smoking.

End: Mia uses a watering can to help the dragon and they become friends.

Notice: The captions explain time or place, while the pictures and dialogue show the action.

✏️ Part 2: Plan Your Six-Panel Comic

First decide on your character, setting, problem and solution.

5. Use the six panels below. Include at least one caption, two speech bubbles, one action word and one sound effect.

Panel 1 — Beginning: Introduce the character and setting.

Panel 2 — Beginning: Show what the character wants or plans.

Panel 3 — Middle: Show the problem beginning.

Panel 4 — Middle: Make the problem more exciting. Add an action word or sound effect.

Panel 5 — End: Show the character solving the problem.

Panel 6 — End: Show the result and how the character feels.

Support: Use these words if you need ideas: Suddenly, Help!, crash, zoom, whispered, worried, relieved, At last.

Extension: Add a twist in Panel 5 or use a visual clue that helps the reader predict the ending.

Success criteria: I can match my pictures to my words, use precise vocabulary, and edit my punctuation and spelling.

Assessment: Look for a logical six-panel sequence, clear characters and setting, a recognisable problem and solution, purposeful illustrations, readable dialogue, accurate punctuation and creative vocabulary.

Support learners: Allow pair planning, provide word banks, read instructions aloud, and let students sketch before writing.

Extension learners: Encourage a subplot, a twist ending, varied sentence openings, or dialogue that reveals character feelings without directly naming them.
