Aotearoa New Zealand’s education policies shape what schools do and how learners are supported. Read the fictional scenario and evidence below. Use them to assess a proposal, identify whose voices matter, and recommend a fair way forward.

The scenario

Te Puna School’s board is considering a proposal to use part of its annual budget for learning support. The draft would fund a quiet, sensory-friendly space, staff training in inclusive teaching, and a coordinator to help connect learners, teachers, specialists and whānau. The coordinator would involve Māori learners and whānau in shaping the support. The board wants to know whether this is fair, effective and consistent with its responsibilities.
