Foot Length Data Collection

Use a ruler marked in centimetres (cm). Measure from the back of your heel to the tip of your longest toe. Keep your foot still and the ruler straight. Ask an adult to help if needed. Never share your measurements with the whole class unless you want to.

Plan your measuring

Think about how you will measure before you begin.

1.A ruler starts at 0 cm. Where should the back of your heel go when you measure your foot?
  • At 0 cm
  • At 1 cm
  • At the end of the ruler
2.Before measuring, predict: will your left foot be longer, your right foot be longer, or will they be the same length? Circle one and then check by measuring.

Measure and record

Measure each foot to the nearest whole centimetre. Write the numbers in the boxes.

3.My left foot is ____ cm long. My right foot is ____ cm long.
4.Compare your two measurements. Which foot is longer, or are they the same length?
  • Left foot
  • Right foot
  • They are the same length
5.How many centimetres longer is the longer foot? If both are the same length, write 0 cm.

Collect the group data

Ask a small group of classmates which foot was longer. Add one tally for each person’s result. Include your own result if you like.

6.Count your tally marks. How many people did you ask altogether?
7.Which result happened most often in your group: left foot longer, right foot longer, or same length?
8.Use your measurements to finish this finding: “My feet were ____ cm and ____ cm long. My ____ foot was longer / they were the same.”
