Introduction to Measurement

Plan a small community garden and check a few everyday measurements. Show your working, include units in your answers, and round only when asked.

Choose and use measurements

Think about what quantity is being measured, then choose a suitable unit and tool.

1.A garden path is 4.8 metres long. Which tool and unit would be most suitable for checking its length?
  • Kitchen scales and kilograms
  • Measuring tape and metres
  • Measuring jug and litres
  • Protractor and degrees
2.Match each measurement to its dimension: length, area, or volume. Write the correct dimension beside each: (a) 12 m, (b) 12 m², (c) 12 m³.
3.The garden soil delivery is 18.5 kg. Convert this mass to grams.
4.A water tank holds 2,750 mL. Convert this capacity to litres.

Plan the garden bed

Use the dimensions and sketch below to solve the garden design problems.

Length: 3.2 m

Width: 1.5 m

Soil depth: 0.25 m

Shape: rectangular prism

5.Calculate the area of the rectangular bed base. Use area = length × width.
6.Calculate the volume of soil needed to fill the bed to a depth of 0.25 m. Use volume = length × width × depth.
7.Soil is sold in 40-litre bags. Since 1 m³ = 1,000 L, how many whole bags are needed to provide at least 1.2 m³ of soil? Show your conversion and explain why you round the way you do.

Check your measurement thinking

Finish by selecting appropriate units and considering accuracy.

8.Choose the best unit for each measurement: the angle of a ramp, the mass of a bag of compost, and the time taken to fill a watering can.
9.A student measures a 2 m garden edge using a ruler marked in millimetres. Another uses a tape measure marked in centimetres. Which tool is likely to make measuring the full edge quicker, and why?
