🔥 The Story of Mahuika

Read the passage below carefully before answering the questions.

Mahuika is the Māori goddess of fire and the guardian of the gift of fire. She lived deep beneath the earth, and her fingernails and toenails were made of pure flame. She was the keeper of this precious gift, which gave warmth, light, and the ability to cook food to all living things.

One day, the trickster demigod Māui visited Mahuika. He told her that his fire had gone out and asked if she would share some with him. Mahuika agreed and pulled off one of her fiery fingernails, giving it to Māui. But Māui was mischievous — he extinguished the flame and returned, asking for more. Again and again he came back with the same story, until nearly all of Mahuika's nails were gone.

Finally, Mahuika realised she had been tricked. Furious, she threw her last remaining nail to the ground. Fire spread across the land, burning forests and chasing Māui as he fled. Māui called on his ancestor Tāwhirimātea, the god of weather, to send rain and save him. The rain poured down and put out the fire, but just before the flames died, Mahuika managed to hide sparks of fire in the trees — the mahoe, tōtara, and kaikōmako. From that day on, people could make fire by rubbing these special woods together, and this is how the knowledge of fire was passed on to humanity.
