Plan the mystery

Imagine Georgia, Tevita and Isla are hiking in the mountains when the group’s map case disappears. You can use this idea or invent your own mountain mystery.

1.Write one clear question that your main character will try to answer. For example: Who moved the map case, and why?

2.Choose a main character and explain why solving this mystery matters to them.

3.Write three different clues. At least one should help solve the mystery, and one may mislead the reader at first.

4.Identify a clue that points readers towards the wrong explanation. How will the real solution explain it?

Build suspense

Use details and pacing to keep readers curious while making the solution fair and believable.

5.Select the sentence that builds a more mysterious mood.

The hikers walked along the track.
Mist curled across the track, hiding the next trail marker.

6.Write two short sentences that make the reader wonder what happens next. Try using a sound, a pause or a surprising discovery.

7.True or false: A satisfying mystery gives readers clues they can use to work out the solution before the detective explains it.

8.Explain what really happened and show how at least two clues point towards the answer.

Revise and polish

Reread your draft aloud. Use these final checks to help your reader follow the mystery and enjoy the ending.

9.Write an ending sentence that reveals the solution and leaves the reader with a final image or feeling.

10.Ask someone to read your mystery. Write one question you could ask them and one change you might make based on their answer.
