Narrative Writing Elements Introduction

Read the short narrative, then investigate how its elements work together. Finish by planning and beginning an original narrative. Use specific details to help your reader imagine the action.

Read: The Light on the Headland

On Saturday evening, Maia and her cousin Theo were walking back from the beach near their small coastal town. Wind pushed salt spray across the track, and the last strip of daylight was fading. Then Maia noticed a pale light blinking beyond the rocks. The old lighthouse had been closed for years. “Someone could be out there,” Theo said. Before Maia could answer, a sharp whistle cut through the wind. It came from below the track, where the path dropped towards the water. Theo wanted to hurry to the car and call for help, but Maia spotted a red scarf caught on a fence post. They followed the scarf only as far as a wide, safe ledge and called out. A voice answered. A kayaker had been blown into a sheltered cove and could not climb the slippery rocks. Maia called emergency services while Theo kept talking to the kayaker so they knew help was coming. Soon, a rescue crew arrived from the road above and lowered a rope. By the time Maia and Theo reached the car, the light beyond the rocks had vanished. Maia wondered whether it had been a torch—or a trick of the storm.

Notice the elements

A narrative is an organised story designed to engage a reader. Characters take part in events; setting establishes when and where they happen. A complication introduces a problem or uncertainty. Rising action builds tension as characters respond. A resolution shows what happens to the problem, though a story may leave some questions open.

9.Write the opening paragraph of the narrative you planned. Introduce the character and setting, and include one detail that hints at the complication. Aim for 4–6 sentences.
