Model letter: Make the school day more active

Dear Board members, Our school should add a short, active break to the middle of each day. Students spend many hours sitting, and a planned movement break could help us return to learning ready to focus. Firstly, moving our bodies can support concentration. After a brisk walk or a game outside, students may feel more alert when they return to class. For example, a five-minute class challenge could get everyone moving without needing special equipment. Secondly, an active break could help students feel more connected. A choice of activities—such as skipping, walking or a quiet stretch—would give people different ways to join in. This matters because not everyone enjoys competitive sport. Some people may worry that a break would take time away from learning. However, a short, well-planned break could make the learning time that follows more productive. Classes could trial the idea for a month and share feedback.
