WALT: Improve our fluency and accuracy through repeated reading.
Success criteria: I can read accurately, pause at punctuation, and use smooth, expressive reading.
Reading reminder: Track the words, pause at punctuation, and reread to improve.
At dusk, a possum climbed into a tall kānuka tree. It nibbled the leaves and searched for fruit. Below, a family of native birds called sharply. The possum had taken over their favourite feeding place.
Possums are introduced pests in Aotearoa New Zealand. They eat plants, eggs and young birds. They can also spread disease and damage gardens. One possum may seem harmless, but many possums can cause a serious problem.
To protect the bush, people work together. They remove food scraps, secure rubbish bins and use safe pest-control methods. Rangers check the forest and record changes. When possum numbers fall, native plants can grow, and birds have more space to feed and nest.
Read the passage more than once. Try to make each rereading smoother and more meaningful.
