A Morning at the Beach Last Saturday, my cousin Maia and I joined a beach clean-up at Ōhope Beach with our whānau. We met the other volunteers near the picnic tables at nine o’clock. The tide was going out, and the sand sparkled in the sunshine. First, we listened to a short safety talk and collected gloves and bags. Next, Maia and I walked along the edge of the dunes. We picked up plastic wrappers, bottle tops and a broken toy shovel. Then we sorted the rubbish into recycling and landfill bags. A volunteer showed us how much rubbish had been collected by weighing the bags. Finally, we washed our hands and shared mandarins under a pōhutukawa tree. I felt proud because our group had helped keep the beach safe for wildlife. I would happily join another clean-up.
