Reflective Recount Writing Scaffold

Plan and write a reflective recount about a real experience from your life. It could be a day out, a challenge you faced, something you learned, or a moment that surprised you. Use the prompts to organise your ideas; you do not need to copy the model answers.

Choose and plan your experience

A reflective recount tells what happened and what the writer thought or learned from it.

1.Choose one real experience you could recount. What was the experience? Note a few details that will help you remember it.

2.Set the scene for your reader. Include who was there, where and when it happened, and what you hoped or expected.

3.Plan three important events in time order. Add a few details about what happened at each point.

4.Use your timeline to check the order of your events. Write one time connective beside each event, such as First, Later, After that or Finally.

Add reflection and bring the story together

A reflection explains your thoughts, feelings or learning. It helps the reader understand why the experience mattered to you.

5.Which sentence best shows a reflection about an experience?

I walked to the gate.
I realised that trying again helped me feel braver.
The path was beside the trees.

6.Write two words that could describe your feelings during your experience. Then explain what caused one of those feelings.

7.Improve this sentence by adding a precise detail or a feeling: “I went across the field.”

8.Join these ideas into one sentence using because, although, while or when: “I felt nervous. I tried again.”

9.Write a possible concluding sentence that explains what you learned or how you might act next time.

Draft and check your recount

Use your plan to write a recount with an orientation, events in time order, reflection and a conclusion.

10.Draft your reflective recount. Include a clear opening, at least three events in order, your thoughts or feelings, and a conclusion about what you learned.

11.Review your draft. Tick each feature you included, then write one part you would improve and how you would improve it.
