Our Solar System
Our solar system is located in a galaxy called the Milky Way. At the centre of our solar system is the Sun, which is a star that provides light and heat to all the planets. The Sun is so large that over one million Earths could fit inside it!
There are eight planets that orbit the Sun. The four planets closest to the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These are called the inner planets and are made mostly of rock. The four outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets are much larger and are made mostly of gas.
Earth is the only planet we know of that has life. It has liquid water, breathable air, and the perfect temperature for living things. Earth has one moon that orbits around it. Some other planets have many moons - Jupiter has over 70 moons!
Between Mars and Jupiter, there is a region called the asteroid belt. This area contains thousands of asteroids - rocky objects that are too small to be called planets. Scientists believe these asteroids are leftover pieces from when the solar system was first formed billions of years ago.
In addition to the planets and asteroids, our solar system is also home to comets. Comets are icy bodies that release gas or dust. They are often seen with bright tails when they come close to the Sun. The most famous comet is Halley's Comet, which can be seen from Earth every 76 years.
Furthermore, the solar system is vast, with distances measured in astronomical units (AU), where 1 AU is the distance from the Earth to the Sun, approximately 93 million miles. The outer reaches of our solar system include the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud, which are regions filled with icy bodies and potential dwarf planets.
