The Tarawera Eruption - 10th June 1886

On the night of 10th June 1886, Mount Tarawera in New Zealand's North Island suddenly erupted without warning. The massive volcanic explosion was heard as far away as Christchurch, over 600 kilometres from the volcano. The eruption lasted for several hours and completely changed the landscape of the Rotorua region.

Before the eruption, the area was famous for the beautiful Pink and White Terraces, natural rock formations that looked like giant staircases made of pink and white stone. These terraces were considered one of the wonders of the world and attracted visitors from around the globe. Sadly, the eruption buried these magnificent terraces under tonnes of volcanic ash and mud, and they were lost forever.

The eruption caused terrible destruction. Three Māori villages - Te Wairoa, Te Ariki, and Moura - were completely buried under volcanic debris. Over 120 people lost their lives that night. The thick ash and mud covered houses, trees, and everything in its path. Some buildings were buried so deeply that only their rooftops could be seen.

Today, visitors can explore the buried village of Te Wairoa, which has been carefully excavated. It serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the tragic events of that June night over 130 years ago.
