Tarawera Eruption Reading Comprehension
📖 Reading Passage
The Tarawera Eruption of 1886
On the night of 10th June 1886, Mount Tarawera in New Zealand's North Island suddenly erupted with tremendous force. The eruption began around 2:00 AM and continued for several hours, creating a terrifying spectacle that could be seen from kilometres away.
The eruption destroyed the famous Pink and White Terraces, natural rock formations that had been considered one of the wonders of the world. These beautiful terraces were formed by hot springs that deposited minerals over thousands of years, creating stunning stepped pools of coloured water.
The volcanic explosion sent ash, rocks, and mud high into the sky. Villages near the mountain, including Te Wairoa, were buried under metres of volcanic debris. Sadly, over 150 people lost their lives in this disaster. The eruption created a deep rift in the mountain that stretched for 17 kilometres, forever changing the landscape of the Rotorua region.
Today, visitors can explore the buried village of Te Wairoa and learn about this significant event in New Zealand's history. The eruption remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in the country's recorded history.
