Te Reo Māori Introductions

Read the mini-dialogue and use the phrase bank to solve the challenges. Macrons matter: write Māori words with their macrons where shown. You may use a fictional name and place for your own introduction.

Kia ora — hello; Tēnā koe — hello to one person; Tēnā kōrua — hello to two people; Tēnā koutou — hello to three or more people; Kei te pēhea koe? — How are you?; Kei te pai ahau — I’m well; Ko wai tō ingoa? — What is your name?; Ko Maia ahau — I am Maia; Nō Kirikiriroa ahau — I am from Hamilton. In this practice dialogue, “Ko [name] ahau” introduces a name and “Nō [place] ahau” tells where someone is from.

At the welcome table

A new group is meeting at a community event. Maia greets one visitor: “Tēnā koe! Ko wai tō ingoa?” The visitor introduces themself and says they are from Ōtautahi. Maia asks, “Kei te pēhea koe?” The visitor answers, “Kei te pai ahau, kia ora.”
