Tenths on a Number Line

A trail map uses a number line from 0 to 1 to show how far each explorer has travelled. Each equal step is one tenth. Read, mark and compare tenths to solve the trail challenges.

Read and place tenths

Use the tenths number lines to locate decimal numbers. Remember: moving right means the number gets larger.

1.On the trail line, a marker is at the sixth tick after 0. What decimal number does it show?

2.Place both trail flags at 0.2 and 0.8 on the number line. Label each flag with its decimal.

3.A supply station is marked at 0.4 on a line divided into tenths from 0 to 1. Which tick marks the station?

4.Fill the gaps in this sequence of tenths: 0.1, , 0.3, , 0.5, , 0.7, , 0.9.

Compare and solve the trail clues

Use the order of tenths on a number line to decide which distances are greater and to put distances in order.

5.Kahu has walked 0.3 km and Mei has walked 0.7 km. Who has walked farther, and by how many tenths of a kilometre?

6.Circle the larger decimal in each pair: (a) 0.4 or 0.6 (b) 0.9 or 0.2 (c) 0.5 or 0.8.

7.Put the distances in order from smallest to largest: 0.6 km, 0.2 km, 0.9 km, 0.4 km.

8.Nikau says 0.8 is less than 0.5 because 8 is less than 5. Is she correct? Explain using tenths.

9.The walking track is 1 km long. Kiri has completed 0.6 km. How many tenths of a kilometre remain? Write the remaining distance as a decimal.

10.Create a trail clue by choosing two different tenths between 0.1 and 0.9. Plot both on the line, write them in order from smaller to larger, and explain how you know.
