A Place to Stand

At the edge of the river, Mereana paused and listened. Water moved over smooth stones, and a tui called from a nearby tree. Beyond the river, the maunga rose above the hills. Mereana was visiting with her koro, who had come to this place many times. He told her stories about their whānau and the people who had cared for the land. As he spoke, Mereana began to understand that a place can hold many connections: to family, to ancestors, to memories, and to the natural world. Her koro used the word tūrangawaewae. It can be understood as a place to stand—a place where a person feels they belong and have a connection. For some people, that connection is to ancestral land; for others, it may grow through family, community, and time. The word does not mean that every person’s experience is the same. Before they left, Mereana picked up a piece of rubbish near the path and put it in her bag. “We should care for places that care for us,” she said. Her koro smiled. Mereana looked back at the river. She felt that she had learned not only a new word, but also a way to think about belonging and responsibility.
