These are called contested events - historical moments where different groups have different perspectives, experiences, and interpretations. Māori Perspective

Many Māori saw the wars as defending their whenua (land), tino rangatiratanga (self-determination), and way of life. They viewed the Crown's actions as breaking Te Tiriti o Waitangi promises and illegally taking their ancestral lands. For Māori, this was about protecting their children's future and maintaining their mana over their territories.

Pākehā/Crown Perspective

Many Pākehā settlers and the Crown viewed the wars as necessary to establish law and order, protect settlers, and develop the colony economically. They saw Māori resistance as rebellion against legitimate government authority and believed they were bringing progress and civilisation to New Zealand.
