A little background

The First World War lasted from 1914 until 1918. New Zealand sent members of its armed forces overseas, including to Gallipoli and the Western Front. Many soldiers spent time in trenches, where cold, mud, illness and danger made daily life difficult. The war’s effects reached families and communities in New Zealand, too. Armistice Day, 11 November, marks the end of the fighting; ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand on 25 April.
