On the first day of our family’s train trip, I tried to write a postcard. I stared at the blank space, then scribbled out three openings. Later, I began a notebook entry about the misty hills sliding past the window. I wrote about the clatter of the wheels, the warm cheese scone in my hand and the sheep dotted across the fields. Nobody had asked for a report, and I did not need to get every sentence perfect. I kept noticing little things I wanted to remember, so the words came more easily. By the time we reached our stop, I had filled two pages.
