Year 6 Reading Comprehension
📖 The Mystery of the Missing Kiwi
Sarah loved visiting her grandmother's farm in Rotorua during the school holidays. The farm was home to many native New Zealand birds, but her favourite was Pip, a young kiwi that lived in the specially protected nocturnal house.
One morning, Sarah discovered that Pip was missing! The door to the nocturnal house was slightly open, and there were strange footprints in the mud nearby. Sarah's heart raced as she imagined all the dangers that could face a kiwi in the wild during daylight hours.
"Don't panic," said Grandmother calmly. "Kiwis are clever birds. Let's follow the trail." Together, they examined the footprints more carefully. The prints were small and round – definitely kiwi tracks. They led from the nocturnal house towards the dense bush behind the farm.
Following the trail through the ferns and native trees, Sarah and her grandmother walked quietly for nearly an hour. The temperature was only 8°C that morning, and Sarah pulled her jacket tighter as they ventured deeper into the bush.
Suddenly, they heard a soft rustling sound coming from beneath a large fallen log about 10 metres away. Grandmother motioned for Sarah to stay very still. As they watched, Pip emerged from under the log, followed by another kiwi – this one much larger.
"Well, I never!" whispered Grandmother with a smile. "It looks like Pip has found himself a friend. That's an adult male kiwi, and they seem to be getting along wonderfully."
Sarah realised that Pip hadn't run away in fear – he had simply been exploring and had discovered another kiwi in the wild. After watching the two birds forage together for a while, Pip noticed Sarah and her grandmother and waddled over to them, as if to say hello.
That evening, they decided to leave the door of the nocturnal house open so Pip could choose where he wanted to spend his time. "Sometimes," said Grandmother, "the best thing we can do for the animals we care about is to let them make their own choices."
