Animal Cell Structure and Functions

Animal cells are the basic building blocks of all animals. Each cell contains several important parts called organelles, each with a specific function. The nucleus acts as the control centre of the cell, containing DNA which controls all cell activities and reproduction. Surrounding the nucleus is the cytoplasm, a jelly-like substance where most chemical reactions take place and where organelles are suspended.

The cell membrane forms the outer boundary of the cell, controlling what enters and leaves the cell. This selective barrier ensures the cell maintains the right balance of nutrients and waste products. Finally, the mitochondria are often called the "powerhouses" of the cell because they produce energy (ATP) through cellular respiration, converting glucose and oxygen into usable energy for all cell processes.
