Fezziwig Christmas Party Worksheet

Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions using evidence from the text. For the question about Scrooge, explain what he is beginning to understand.

The Fezziwig Christmas Party

On Christmas Eve, Fezziwig and his wife opened the doors of their warehouse and welcomed their workers and neighbours inside. The room, usually filled with crates and ledgers, had been swept clean. Holly hung from the beams, and candles glimmered along the walls. Mrs Fezziwig had prepared a table crowded with pies, roast meat, fruit and steaming bowls of punch. Mr Fezziwig clapped his hands and called for music. Soon, the fiddler was playing a lively tune. Couples spun across the floor while others stamped their feet and laughed along. Young Ebenezer Scrooge, who worked for Fezziwig, joined the dancing. He watched his employer greet each guest as if they were an old friend. Fezziwig joked with the children, made sure the older visitors had comfortable seats, and encouraged shy guests to join in. He seemed to bring warmth and cheer wherever he went. The party lasted late into the evening. When the guests finally left, they carried their good humour out into the cold night. Scrooge remembered how little the celebration might have cost Fezziwig, yet how much happiness it had given everyone.
