Heatwave Story Questions

Boy cooling off in summer heat

📖 The Story

Read this story carefully, then answer the questions below:

Nine-year-old Jake wiped the sweat from his forehead as he stared out of his bedroom window. The thermometer outside read 35°C – the hottest day of the summer so far! His mum had warned him to stay indoors during the heatwave, but Jake was getting restless.

"Right then," said Mum, appearing in his doorway with a big smile. "Let's beat this heat properly!" She filled up the paddling pool in their back garden whilst Jake gathered his water pistols and foam rockets. Soon, he was splashing about in the cool water, firing jets at the fence and laughing as his little sister Mia joined in.

After an hour of water games, they moved into the shade of their apple tree. Mum brought out ice lollies – orange ones, Jake's favourite – and they sat on the picnic blanket telling jokes. "This is much better than being stuck indoors," Jake thought, as a gentle breeze rustled the leaves above them.

As the afternoon continued, Jake helped Mum hang wet towels on the washing line, which would help cool the house. They closed all the curtains to keep the sun out, and Jake even put a damp flannel on his neck – just like his granddad had taught him. By teatime, Jake felt refreshed and happy. The heatwave was still there, but now he knew exactly how to stay cool and have fun at the same time.
