Identity Mind Mapping

Use this worksheet to explore how writers can represent identity. You may write about yourself, invent a character, or combine both. You do not need to share anything private. Use specific details and explain what they reveal.

A character in pieces

Read this short profile. Notice how small details can suggest different parts of a person’s identity. At weekends, Samir helps his grandfather repair old radios. He likes the patient quiet of the workshop, although his friends think he is always joking. At home, he speaks English and Urdu; at football practice, he is known for remembering everyone’s preferred position. He keeps a notebook of overheard phrases and hopes to write a play one day. Samir is proud of his family’s stories, but he sometimes wonders whether people see only one part of him.

Read between the details

Use Samir’s profile to practise making inferences. Support each idea with a detail from the text.

1.Which detail most clearly suggests that Samir is patient? Choose one and explain how it supports your answer.
2.Samir has several interests and roles. Which combination best shows that he is more than one thing?
  • He speaks English and Urdu.
  • He repairs radios, jokes with friends, plays football and writes down phrases.
  • He wonders what people think of him.
3.Match each detail from Samir’s profile to the identity strand it most strongly suggests. A detail may connect to more than one strand.
  • Helping his grandfather repair radios
  • Keeping a notebook of overheard phrases
  • Remembering teammates’ preferred positions
  • Consideration for others
  • Family connection
  • Creative interest
4.What might Samir mean when he wonders whether people see only one part of him? Give one possible interpretation, using evidence from the profile.

Build a mind map for writing

Plan a character or a version of yourself. Choose details you are comfortable using. Aim for specific examples rather than broad labels such as “nice” or “interesting”.

5.Choose a central label for your mind map, such as “A character I’m creating” or “Who I am”. Write it in the centre, then add at least four branches. Possible branches include interests, values, important people, places, languages, memories, strengths, challenges and hopes.
Put your chosen central label in the middle. Draw branches for at least four strands of identity. Add a specific example to each branch, and connect ideas that influence one another.
6.Choose one branch from your map. Add a vivid, specific detail that could help a reader picture it. For example, replace “likes music” with a detail about what the character listens to, where, or why.
7.Complete this sentence with an idea from your map: “People might first notice , but they may not realise .”
8.Turn two branches of your map into a connection. Explain how one strand of identity affects another.

Shape the ideas into a paragraph

Use the plan you made to write a short character paragraph. Select details that reveal identity rather than trying to include every branch.

9.Write a paragraph of 5–7 sentences introducing your character or chosen self. Include at least two specific details from different mind-map branches and show how they connect.
10.Re-read your paragraph. Underline one detail that shows rather than tells, then write what a reader could infer from it. If you cannot underline on this sheet, copy the detail.
