Ohm's Law Calculations

A technician is testing components for a small battery-powered model. Use Ohm’s law, V = I × R, to analyse the readings. Rearrange it when needed: I = V ÷ R and R = V ÷ I. Show your working and include units.

Read the circuit

Use your knowledge of circuit symbols and how measuring instruments are connected in a circuit.

1.Which instrument measures the current through the resistor, and how is it connected?
  • A voltmeter connected in parallel
  • An ammeter connected in series
  • An ammeter connected in parallel
  • A voltmeter connected in series
2.What is the unit of resistance? Give its symbol.

Calculate the missing value

For each component, assume its resistance stays constant during the test. Write the equation, substitute the values, and give your answer with the correct unit.

3.A test resistor has a current of 0.40 A and a resistance of 30 Ω. Calculate the potential difference across it.
4.A lamp has 9.0 V across it and a current of 0.30 A. Calculate its resistance.
5.A 24 Ω resistor is connected across a 6.0 V supply. Calculate the current through it.
6.A heater element carries 1.5 A when the potential difference across it is 18 V. Calculate its resistance.

Investigate the relationship

A student tests a fixed resistor and records these readings: 2 V gives 0.10 A; 4 V gives 0.20 A; 6 V gives 0.30 A.

7.Use one pair of readings to calculate the resistance. Then check whether the other readings support your result.
8.The student keeps the same resistor but doubles the potential difference from 6 V to 12 V. Predict the new current and explain how you know.
9.A component has 10 V across it and carries 0.50 A. A second component has the same potential difference but carries 0.25 A. Which has the greater resistance? Calculate both resistances to justify your answer.
10.A student says, “If current increases while resistance stays fixed, the potential difference must decrease.” Explain whether the student is correct using Ohm’s law.
