Overview

This 30-minute session introduces 4th grade students to simple French greetings and phrases, aimed at enhancing cultural understanding and linguistic curiosity. Through interactive activities aligned to Common Core Speaking and Listening standards, students will practice pronunciation, engage in meaningful conversations, and build foundational communication skills relevant across disciplines.

Lesson Timeline

1. Warm-Up & Introduction (5 minutes)

• Greet the student with “Bonjour!” and explain the day’s focus.
• Briefly introduce French as a global language spoken in many countries. Show the cultural poster/image.
• State the learning goal: "Today we will learn to say hello, goodbye, and thank you in French."

2. Teach Vocabulary with Audio Support (7 minutes)

• Introduce 5 key greetings/phrases: Bonjour (hello), Au revoir (goodbye), Merci (thank you), S'il vous plaît (please), Ça va? (How are you?)
• Use flashcards visually and play audio clips to model pronunciation.

3. Interactive Dialogue Practice (10 minutes)

• Set a simple scripted conversation using the phrases:

• Discuss why learning greetings in another language is important (shows respect, helps make friends, understanding cultures).
• Ask: "How do you greet someone in your family? How is it like or different than in French?"
• Write the student’s answer on the board and compare briefly to French greetings.

5. Quick Assessment & Closure (3 minutes)

• Conduct a quick verbal quiz: ask the student the meaning of each French phrase and have them respond in French.
• Praise all efforts and remind student that practice daily increases confidence in language learning.
• Assign an optional “French word of the day” for practice before the next session (e.g., “Bonjour”).
