Canonical Filipino Writers

Lesson Objectives

1. Understand: Students will understand the contributions of canonical Filipino writers to national literature.
2. Analyze: Students will analyze specific works of canonical Filipino writers.
3. Appreciate: Students will appreciate the literary techniques and themes used by these writers.
4. Create: Students will create their own piece of writing inspired by the techniques discussed.

Materials Needed

• Excerpts from works by José Rizal, Nick Joaquin, and F. Sionil José.
• Projector/SMART Board
• Handouts with discussion questions
• Paper and pens for note-taking and writing exercises

Lesson Structure (100 minutes)

Introduction (10 minutes)

1. Bell Work: As students enter the classroom, have a brief quiz on American writers to warm up their literary minds.
2. Hook: Show an engaging, short video clip highlighting the impact of literature on culture and identity (3 minutes).
3. Objective Sharing: Clearly outline the day's objectives on the board and briefly discuss what students will learn and why it’s important.

Activity 1: Background Information (15 minutes)

1. Presentation: Give a concise PowerPoint presentation on the historical and cultural backgrounds of José Rizal, Nick Joaquin, and F. Sionil José.
2. Discussion: Split the class into three groups and assign each one writer. Allow a few minutes for students to discuss amongst themselves than share some interesting facts about their assigned writer with the class.

Activity 2: Reading and Analysis (30 minutes)

1. Reading: Distribute selected excerpts. Each group reads an excerpt from one of the three writers.
   • José Rizal: Excerpt from Noli Me Tángere
   • Nick Joaquin: Excerpt from The Woman Who Had Two Navels
   • F. Sionil José: Excerpt from Po-on
2. Guided Analysis: Use the projector to show guiding questions for analysis:
   • What are the prominent themes?
   • What literary techniques are used?
   • How do these reflect the Filipino culture and historical context?
3. Group Discussion: Each group discusses their answers and appoints a spokesperson to share their findings.

Break (5 minutes)

Activity 3: Class Discussion and Synthesis (20 minutes)

1. Whole-Class Discussion:
   • Reconvene and allow each group to present their analysis to the entire class.
   • Facilitate a class discussion comparing the different styles and themes of the three writers.
   • Encourage students to think critically about how each writer’s cultural and historical background influenced their work.

Activity 4: Creative Writing (15 minutes)

1. Prompt: Instruct students to write a short piece (200-300 words) inspired by one of the discussed writers' themes or techniques.
   • Students can choose to write a poem, a short narrative, or an essay.
2. Write and Share: Allow students to write individually then pair up to share their pieces with a partner for feedback.

Conclusion (5 minutes)

1. Recap: Summarize key points of the lesson highlighting the importance of these writers to Filipino and world literature.
2. Exit Ticket: Ask students to write down one thing they learned today and one question they still have about the topic.

Assessment

1. Formative Assessments: Group discussions and analysis, creative writing piece.
2. Summative Assessment: Evaluate the students’ understanding based on their creative pieces and participation in discussions.

Extensions and Homework

1. Essay Assignment: Assign students to write a more extended essay (500-700 words) analyzing a specific theme or technique they learned today in detail.

• Consider whether students were able to draw connections between the writers' backgrounds and their works.
