Lesson Breakdown

1️⃣ Warm-Up Activity (10 minutes) – Counting Relay

👟 Interactive Counting Race

• Split students into two teams.
• One team counts forward from 1 to 50.
• The other team counts backward from 50 to 1.
• Have students pass a small ball to the next player as they count in sequence.
• Introduce a quick challenge: Missing number fill-in on the board.

2️⃣ Whole-Class Instruction (15 minutes) – Place Value Introduction

📖 Explaining Tens and Ones

• Display numbers from 10 to 99 and emphasize the tens and ones place.
• Use colored number blocks to visually separate tens and ones.
• Example: Show 56 as 5 tens (50) + 6 ones (6).
• Ask students, “What would happen if I add one more to 56?”

3️⃣ Group Work (15 minutes) – Hands-On Learning Stations

🔄 Students rotate through three stations (5 minutes per station).

🧩 Station 1: Skip Counting by 10s

• Students complete number sequences by writing missing multiples of 10 (10, 20, __, 40).
• Use a jumping game: Students physically hop forward in 10s.

💰 Station 2: Place Value Fun with Coins

• Students use pennies, dimes, and quarters to build numbers.
• Example: Show 63 using dimes for tens and pennies for ones.
• Write numbers in expanded form (e.g., 63 = 60 + 3).

• Students color groups of tens and ones to match given numbers.

4️⃣ Independent Practice (10 minutes) – Mini Challenges

1. Counting Forward from Any Number: Start counting forward from any given number between 30 and 90.
2. Counting Backward from Any Number: Write the next five numbers backward from any number between 50 and 100.
3. Expanded Form Matching: Match numbers to their correct expanded form (e.g., 72 → 70 + 2).

5️⃣ Wrap-Up (10 minutes) – Place Value Riddles & Discussion

❓ Solve Fun Riddles

• Example: “I am a number with 4 tens and 3 ones. What am I?”
• Students discuss answers with partners.
