• Computers or tablets with pre-installed software such as AIVA and Suno. Alternatively, Soundtrap or BandLab could be used.
• DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) like Logic Pro X or GarageBand.
• MIDI keyboards or MIDI controllers (optional).
• Headphones for each student or pair.
• Whiteboard/Smartboard for instructor demonstrations.

Lesson Structure

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Goal: Create context and introduce the topic of AI in music composition.

1. Begin the class by playing two short music tracks:

   • One composed entirely by an AI.
   • One composed by a human, with subtle AI assistance.

2. Ask:

   • "What are your initial reactions? Did the two tracks feel different to you emotionally or creatively?"
   • "What could be the potential benefits and drawbacks of using AI in music production?"

3. Write student responses on the board, briefly introducing the idea of blending AI’s speed/precision with the creativity and emotion of a human composer.

Task Introduction (5 minutes)

Goal: Explain the activity, tools, and goals.

1. Explain the task: Students will generate a 16-bar musical idea using an AI engine, then personalize and refine it to make it their own.

2. Highlight the importance of not solely relying on the AI, but embracing it as a tool to augment their creativity.

3. Introduce real-life applications of this process, such as:

   • Scoring a film scene.
   • Designing a video game soundtrack.
   • Creating a jingle for a commercial.

4. Group students into pairs (11 groups). Fewer groups ensure focused collaboration.

Creativity Task (35 minutes)

Step 1: AI Generation (7 minutes)

• Each group selects their preferred AI tool (AIVA, Suno, or other available software).

• Students must choose one real-life scenario (from the prompts below) to frame their composition:

  1. Scoring a suspenseful moment in a thriller film.
  2. Writing cheerful background music for an upbeat soda commercial.
  3. Creating a haunting melody for an abandoned castle in a video game.
  4. Developing an emotional underscore for a speech in a drama series.

• Students generate a 16-bar idea (melody, chords, or rhythm).

• Save the AI-generated output for the next phase.

Step 2: Personalization (15 minutes)

• Students import AI-generated material into Logic Pro X, GarageBand, or another DAW.

• Tasks to personalize:

  1. Add Layers: Add one or more instrument parts using virtual or live instruments (e.g., harmony, bassline, percussion).
  2. Refine Melody: Adjust rhythms, phrasing, or note choices to create a unique tone or mood.
  3. Dynamic Contrast: Edit dynamics, volume, or instrumentation to enhance the emotional impact.

• Instructor circulates to assist in showcasing DAW features like quantizing, MIDI editing, or arranging.

Step 3: Evaluation (5 minutes)

• Each group evaluates their draft critically, using these guiding prompts:
  • “Does this fit the emotional tone of the chosen scenario?”
  • “Have we balanced AI-generated ideas with our own input?”

Wrap-Up and Sharing (5 minutes)

1. Reconvene as a class.
2. Ask one or two groups (volunteers or chosen ahead) to play their compositions for the class.
3. Facilitate a discussion:
   • “What choices did you make to refine the AI output?”
   • “Did the AI spark ideas you hadn’t thought of initially?”
4. Emphasize the role of AI as a collaborative partner, not a replacement for human creativity.

• Students expand their 16-bar draft into a complete 32-bar composition and prepare a short description of the tone and mood they aimed to achieve.
