• Students write quick 2-3 sentence personal reflections in their notebooks.

• Briefly introduce the unit, set expectations, and explain today’s objectives.

10-30 mins | Mini Lecture & Visual Presentation: The Bible’s Purpose and Structure

• Present a multimedia slideshow explaining:
  • The Bible as foundational scripture to Christian faith.
  • The Bible's overarching divine purpose: revelation, guidance, covenant, salvation.
  • Divide into Old vs. New Testament — historical context and theological significance.
  • Overview of literary genres: narrative, law, poetry, prophecy, gospel, epistle, apocalyptic literature.
• Use visual aids (charts/graphics) to map Bible structure.

30-45 mins | Deep Dive into Genre Exploration—Group Jigsaw Activity

• Divide students into 6 groups; assign each a Bible genre:
  1. Narrative (Genesis 1-3)
  2. Poetry (Psalm 23)
  3. Prophecy (Isaiah 53)
  4. Gospel Narrative (Mark 1:1-20)
  5. Epistle (Romans 8)
  6. Parable (Luke 15:11-32)
• Each group reads the passage and answers:
  • What genre is this?
  • What message does it convey?
  • How does this genre serve the Bible’s overall purpose?
• Prepare to share findings with the class.

45-70 mins | Group Presentations and Collaborative Discussion

• Groups present their analysis (3-4 minutes each).
• After each presentation, facilitate quick Q&A and highlight connections between genres.
• Lead a class discussion: How do these genres together create a unified divine narrative? What is the impact of scripture on faith and society?
• Encourage citing textual evidence, promoting critical thinking and close reading skills (aligning with CCSS R.H.11-12.1 and SL.11-12.1).

70-90 mins | Thematic Overview — Facilitated Brainstorming & Chart Creation

• Ask students to identify key themes emerging from the scripture passages. Examples to guide: covenant, salvation, justice, mercy, human nature, redemption.
• In pairs, students brainstorm themes, then compile ideas on the whiteboard/chart paper.
• Together, synthesize into a class-generated thematic map of scripture.
• Discuss how these themes illustrate the Bible’s divine purpose.

90-110 mins | Reflective Writing and Sharing

• Students independently write a 1-page reflection answering:
  • How does understanding the Bible’s structure and purpose deepen your appreciation of scripture?
  • Which literary genre do you find most compelling or impactful—and why?
• Volunteers share excerpts.
• Optionally, encourage students to connect themes to modern-day issues or personal beliefs.

110-120 mins | Exit Ticket and Closure

• Distribute index cards for exit tickets with prompts:
  • One key insight about the Bible’s purpose or structure you learned today.
  • One question or idea you want to explore further in this unit.
• Collect exit tickets.
• Summarize the lesson’s major points and preview Lesson 2: Deeper analysis of Old Testament themes.
