Objective:

Students will develop their communication skills by practicing presenting information through engaging speaking and focused listening activities.

Standards:

• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.4: Present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly and concisely, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.
• CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.9-10.1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions.

Materials Needed:

• Timer or stopwatch
• Sets of index cards with topics written on them (one topic per card)
• Small whiteboards and markers
• Rubber ball for an interactive game

Lesson Plan

Introduction (1 minute)

1. Greeting & Objective Brief:
   • Welcome the students and explain that the goal of today's lesson is to enhance their communication skills by practicing how to present information clearly and effectively while also listening actively.
   • Highlight that effective communication is essential in both academic and real-world settings.

Activity 1: Quick-Fire Presentations (2 minutes)

1. Explain the Activity:
   • Explain that students will participate in a rapid-fire speaking exercise designed to help them think on their feet and present information quickly and clearly.
2. Distribute Materials:
   • Hand out index cards with different topics written on them to each student. Topics should be age-appropriate and could include prompts like “The benefits of social media,” “Why exercise is essential,” or “My favorite book.”
3. Set the Timer:
   • Students will have 30 seconds each to present information on their given topic.
   • Encourage students to focus on clear, concise communication, and maintaining eye contact.
4. Student Presentations:
   • Call on each student and let them present their topic for 30 seconds. Use a timer to manage the time strictly.

Activity 2: Listening Game with a Twist (2 minutes)

1. Explain the Listening Game:
   • Organize the class into smaller groups of 5. Distribute small whiteboards and markers to each group.
   • Explain that one person from each group will present a short story or piece of information for 30 seconds (continuation from the Quick-Fire Presentation), while others will listen carefully.
2. Active Listening Action:
   • After the speaker finishes, other group members will write down one key point they remember from the presentation on their whiteboard.
   • Encourage them to listen for details and important information.
3. Interactive Summary:
   • The listener with the best recollection will be selected by each group. Make this part fun by passing a rubber ball such that only the person holding the ball can speak.
4. Share Key Points:
   • The selected listeners will share their key points with the whole class.

Conclusion & Reflection (1 minute)

1. Recap & Discuss:
   • Summarize the key lessons learned from the activities.
   • Highlight the importance of clear and concise speaking and active listening.
2. Reflect:
   • Ask students to reflect on one thing they learned about their own communication skills and one thing they found interesting from their peers.

Homework/Extension

• Personal Presentation:
  • Have students prepare a 1-minute presentation on a topic of their choice to be presented in the next class. This allows for a more thorough application of the skills practiced during the lesson.
