Materials Needed

• Interactive storybook (digital or print with dyslexia-friendly font) about government services
• Chart paper with prepared guided questions
• Markers
• Drawing paper and crayons (for extension activity)

Lesson Activities

1. Introduction & Connect (5 minutes)

• Greet students and say: “Today we will learn about the helpful jobs the government does for everyone.”
• Use simple language to define government services, e.g., “These are things like firefighters helping us, police keeping us safe, and libraries giving us books.”
• Ask students: "Can you think of a place or service the government provides in our community?"
• Briefly listen and acknowledge responses.

2. Interactive Story Read-Aloud (10 minutes)

• Read an interactive storybook version about government services. Choose a story featuring familiar, concrete examples like firefighters, police officers, public parks, and libraries.
• Use a dyslexia-friendly font or audio narration to accommodate diverse learners.
• Pause at key story points to ask simple questions:
  • “Who helps us if there is a fire?”
  • “What place can we go to to read books for free?”
• Partner work: Have students turn to their neighbor and discuss answers to one question each time the story pauses.

3. Guided Discussion (8 minutes)

• Bring the class back together.
• Use chart paper listing 4 guided questions:
  1. What are some jobs the government does to help people?
  2. Why do you think these jobs are important?
  3. How do these services help our community?
  4. Can we use these services whenever we need them?
• Call on pairs to share their ideas, encouraging all to participate while providing sentence starters (e.g., “I think the fire department helps because…”).
• Write student answers on chart paper to reinforce understanding visually.

4. Wrap-Up & Extension (7 minutes)

• Recap the lesson: “We learned the government helps us in many ways. Firefighters, police, libraries, and parks are all services for everyone.”
• For advanced learners, introduce an extension activity: “If you want, you can write or draw a short report about a public service you like. You can tell why you think it is helpful.”
• Provide drawing and writing materials for this activity. It can be done in class or sent home.
• For students still learning or with IEPs, offer the option to share their thoughts orally with a partner or teacher instead of writing.
