Lesson Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will:
✅ Understand that families have unique traditions, customs, and histories.
✅ Recognize similarities and differences between their family heritage and others.
✅ Share a family tradition or story with their classmates.

Materials Needed

📷 Printed family pictures (sent from home, if possible)
🎨 Colored paper, glue sticks, and crayons
🧩 Family Heritage Puzzle pieces (pre-cut)
📖 "The Family Book" by Todd Parr (or another simple book on families)

Lesson Breakdown (30 Minutes)

1. Warm-Up Discussion (5 Minutes) – “Who Is in My Family?”

• Gather students in a circle.
• Ask: "Who lives in your home with you?"
• Show simple illustrations of different types of families (e.g., large families, small families, single-parent families, grandparents as caregivers).
• Emphasize: “Families are special in different ways!”
• Read The Family Book by Todd Parr (or an alternative story about diverse families).

2. Family Heritage Collage (10 Minutes) – “Our Special Traditions”

• Each student receives a piece of colored paper.
• If students brought pictures from home, they can glue them onto the paper.
• Help students draw pictures of meaningful family activities (e.g., cooking a special meal, holiday traditions, traveling).
• Ask guiding questions:
  • “What’s something special your family does together?”
  • “Do you have a favorite food your family makes?”

3. Family Puzzle Activity (8 Minutes) – “What Makes Us Unique?”

• Provide each child with a puzzle piece cutout.
• Students draw or write (with teacher help) one special thing about their family on their puzzle piece.
• Assemble all the puzzle pieces on a classroom board to show how different families fit together in their classroom community.

4. Sharing Time (5 Minutes) – “Tell Us About Your Family”

• Each student shares one thing about their family’s heritage.
• Encourage and celebrate differences by saying:
  • “That sounds amazing! Everyone’s family is unique and special!”
• Summarize: “Even though our families may look different, we all have things that make us special!”

Wrap-Up & Reflection (2 Minutes) – “What Did We Learn?”

• Ask a few students to share something new they learned about a classmate’s family.
• Reinforce the idea that heritage is about family history, traditions, and the people we love.
• Teacher says:
  • “All families are important. You all shared something beautiful today!”

✅ Observation: Teacher notes how well students engage with the discussions and activities.
✅ Exit Reflection: Ask students to finish this sentence: “My family is special because…”
✅ Extension: Create a classroom "Family Tree" display with students' drawings and stories.
