Teaching Instructions

This is lesson 4 of 7 in the unit "Strider Bike Adventures". Lesson Title: Exploring Personal Space Lesson Description: This lesson will focus on recognizing personal space while riding. Students will practice riding in a designated area, learning to navigate around others safely and effectively.

Exploring Personal Space

Curriculum Area and Level

Subject: Physical Education (PE)
Unit: Strider Bike Adventures (Lesson 4 of 7)
Curriculum Framework: Aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Development Matters guidelines for Physical Development
Focus: Gross motor skills, balance, spatial awareness, and safety

Lesson Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will:

  • Understand the concept of personal space when riding.
  • Develop balance and control while navigating around others.
  • Practise maintaining a safe distance from peers while riding.
  • Demonstrate awareness of obstacles and adjust movement accordingly.

Resources Needed

  • 16 Strider balance bikes (one per student)
  • Helmets for each child
  • Cones or floor markers to designate riding space
  • A whistle
  • Visual cue cards showing 'too close', 'just right', and 'too far'

Lesson Structure (30 Minutes Total)

1. Warm-Up (5 Minutes) – "Bubble Space Game"

Objective: Help students understand personal space in a fun, engaging way before using bikes.

  • Ask children to stand in a large circle, arms outstretched like "bird wings".
  • Explain that their wings should not touch anyone else's wings—this is their "bubble space".
  • Have students walk around the area imagining they are “bubbles” floating, ensuring they do not bump into others.
  • Gradually transition to jogging or sidestepping, reinforcing how to adjust movements to avoid collisions.

Teacher's Cue: "If our bubbles pop (touch), we need to adjust our movement!"

2. Introduction to Riding Concept (5 Minutes) – "My Bike Bubble"

Objective: Establish the idea of keeping space while riding.

  • Hand out bikes and helmets, ensuring all children are safely equipped.
  • Remind them about their "bubble", but this time, it's their bike's personal space.
  • Demonstrate how to pause, slow down, or steer slightly to avoid getting too close to a friend.

Tip for Engagement: Use a fun analogy – their bike is like a spaceship, and they need to navigate safely without crashing into planets!

3. Main Activity (15 Minutes) – "Space Explorer Ride"

Objective: Practise moving around while maintaining personal space with an increasing level of challenge.

Phase 1: "Follow the Leader" – 5 Minutes

  • Designate one child as the leader and have others follow while keeping space between.
  • Rotate leaders every minute.
  • Use visual cue cards to reinforce spacing (hold up signs – "too close!", "just right!").

Phase 2: "Safe Zone Steering" – 5 Minutes

  • Set up cones to create "safe zones" around the riding area.
  • Students must ride freely, avoiding close contact with others while navigating the space.
  • When the whistle blows, they stop where they are and check if they are in a safe distance from others.

Phase 3: "Traffic Jam Escape" – 5 Minutes

  • Randomly call "traffic jam!", and all students freeze.
  • One by one, they assess if they need to shift their position to create safe spacing.
  • Reward students who successfully keep their personal space throughout!

4. Cool Down (5 Minutes) – "Park and Reflect"

Objective: Reinforce learning while allowing for calm closure.

  • Guide students to park their bikes neatly in a row.
  • Have them sit in a semi-circle and discuss:
    • What did they do to stay safe?
    • What was tricky about keeping personal space?
    • How can they practise this when cycling at home or in the playground?
  • End with a deep breathing exercise as “cooling engines down” before heading back inside.

Assessment and Differentiation

Formative Assessment:

  • Observe students’ ability to maintain space during activities.
  • Use questioning to assess understanding (e.g. “What happens if we go too close?”).

Differentiation:

  • For less confident riders: Offer a smaller, less crowded space to practice before joining the larger group.
  • For more advanced riders: Introduce a "slow-motion challenge" where they must ride while maintaining distance at a reduced speed for added control.

Teacher Reflection

  • Did students grasp the concept of personal space while riding?
  • Were they able to adjust their movements safely without reminders?
  • How can this be reinforced in the next lesson?

This lesson provides a fun, structured, and engaging approach to teaching balance bike safety while meeting the EYFS goals for gross motor development. 🎉🚲
