Expressive Paper Collage

Overview

This 60-minute project encourages 6th-grade students to explore creativity, develop fine motor and spatial reasoning skills, and practice self-expression through paper crafting. Students will design a personal collage using construction paper, scissors, glue, and colored pencils, integrating abstract shapes and symbols that represent their interests or identity.

Materials Needed (for 25 students)

Detailed Activity Plan

Introduction (10 minutes)

• Engage (5 min):
  • Begin with a short discussion on what "self-expression" means through art.
  • Show simple examples of paper collages that express emotions, ideas, or stories (teacher-created or printed examples).

  • Introduce materials and safety rules for scissors/glue.
  • Explain the project goal: "Create a collage that represents something meaningful about you - your interests, feelings, or dreams."
  • Demonstrate basic techniques: layering, cutting shapes, gluing efficiently, and coloring details.

Planning & Sketching (10 minutes)

• Students sketch a rough draft on white paper, mapping out the shapes and symbols they want to use.
• Teacher circulates, asks probing questions: "What shapes show your idea?" "What colors express your mood?"
• Encourage simple geometric shapes (circles, triangles, squares) combined in creative ways.

Crafting the Collage (25 minutes)

• Students choose construction paper colors and begin cutting shapes based on their sketches.
• Glue shapes onto white base paper to create their collage, layering pieces for depth and visual interest.
• Use colored pencils to add details, outlines, or small decorations to enhance meaning.

Reflection & Sharing (10 minutes)
