Family Portrait Creations

Overview

This five-day series invites 4th-grade students to design and create a family portrait focusing on shapes and diversity. Students will develop observation, drawing, and coloring skills while exploring personal and familial identity through art. The project culminates in a classroom sharing session where students discuss their portraits. This series is aligned with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the National Core Arts Standards to support comprehensive learning.

Learning Objectives

Students will learn to:

• Use geometric shapes to construct body parts and create a person.
• Select and apply various skin tones and hair colors to reflect diverse family characteristics.
• Apply craftsmanship skills by following multi-step directions and taking care in their artwork.

By:

• Practicing shape identification and replication through drawing.
• Using skin tone crayons to represent realistic and diverse human features.
• Engaging in a classroom discussion to describe their family members.

In order to:

• Create a meaningful family portrait for the Square 1 Art fundraiser.
• Understand how shapes form the basis of complex images.
• Develop confidence in sharing personal narratives through art.
