Focused Two-Touch Skills
Overview
This Physical Education (PE) lesson focuses on teaching 7th-grade students the fundamental soccer skill of two-touch passing, aligned with US National Physical Education Standards (SHAPE America). The goal is to enhance students’ communication, teamwork, and accuracy in the context of soccer while building movement competency and tactical understanding.
Curriculum Alignment
- Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns.
- Standard 2: Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.
- Standard 4: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- Perform proper two-touch passing technique (trap and pass) with accuracy.
- Work in pairs or small groups to effectively communicate and collaborate during passing drills.
- Understand the importance of body positioning and timing during two-touch passing.
Lesson Sequence
Warm-Up Activities (10 Minutes)
Objective: Increase heart rate, engage muscles used in soccer, and introduce ball familiarity.
-
Dynamic Soccer Stretching (4 Minutes):
- Leg swings (forward/backward and side-to-side)
- High knees
- Arm circles while jogging
- Controlled toe-touches on the ball
-
"Follow the Leader" Dribbling Game (6 Minutes):
- Students partner up. The leader dribbles the soccer ball around the field/space while the follower mirrors their movements without a ball. Switch roles after 3 minutes.
Skill Development (15 Minutes)
Objective: Learn and practice two-touch passing with proper technique.
-
Technique Breakdown (5 Minutes):
- Demonstrate two-touch passing with student volunteers.
- Key Points:
- First touch: Trap/control the ball using the inside of the foot.
- Second touch: Pass the ball with the inside of the foot using controlled force and aiming at the target.
- Body positioning: Stay slightly bent at the knees, and align your non-kicking foot to point toward the target.
- Communication: Call out to your teammate to signal readiness.
-
Partner Passing Drills (10 Minutes):
- Students pair up and pass the ball back and forth with two touches each.
- Start at a short distance (10-15 feet) and gradually increase as competency improves.
- Teacher moves between pairs to provide feedback, focusing on accuracy and form.
Small Group Activity (15 Minutes)
Objective: Apply two-touch passing in a more dynamic, game-like scenario.
-
Passing Relay Race (8 Minutes):
- Divide the class into four teams of five.
- Set up cones in a zigzag pattern.
- One student starts, passing the ball with two touches to the next teammate, who must control it and pass back or forward.
- First team to successfully pass the ball through all teammates and back wins.
-
Four-Corner Passing Challenge (7 Minutes):
- Set up a square with cones (~10-12 yards apart).
- Students form groups of 4-5 and occupy each corner.
- Practice passing the ball around clockwise, using two touches. Add competition by timing how quickly teams can complete 10 successful passes without interception.
Scrimmage and Game Sense (12 Minutes)
Objective: Incorporate two-touch passing within live gameplay and develop tactical awareness.
-
Small-Sided Scrimmage:
- Divide students into four teams of 5.
- Two teams scrimmage for 5 minutes while the other two observe (rotate every 5 minutes).
- Encourage two-touch passing and reinforce quick decision-making during play.
-
Feedback and Strategy:
- Pause gameplay briefly to provide constructive feedback on how players can improve passing accuracy and teamwork during scrimmage.
Cool-Down and Reflection (8 Minutes)
Objective: Reduce heart rate and help students reflect on the lesson objectives.
-
Static Soccer Stretching (4 Minutes):
- Seated hamstring stretches.
- Butterfly stretch.
- Standing quad/triceps stretches.
-
Reflection and Group Discussion (4 Minutes):
- Ask students:
- "What went well with your two-touch passing today?"
- "What will you focus on improving next time?"
- "How did communication help during passing drills and games?"
- Reinforce the importance of communication and teamwork outside of sports.
Assessment Criteria
- Skill Proficiency: Observe students’ accuracy and control during passing drills and gameplay.
- Teamwork: Monitor how well they communicate and collaborate with teammates.
- Understanding: Check for comprehension during reflection/discussion and on-the-spot questions during drills.
Equipment and Setup
- 10 soccer balls
- 16 cones (for relays and drills)
- Stopwatch or timer
- Whistle for transitions
Modifications & Extensions
For Less Experienced Students:
- Decrease the distance for passing drills.
- Slow down the drills and focus more on technique before introducing competition.
For Advanced Students:
- Increase distance for passing.
- Introduce a defender in the Four-Corner Passing Challenge to increase difficulty.
Inclusive Adaptations:
- For students with mobility challenges: Use hands to roll the ball or adapt activities to focus on upper-body coordination like a seated target pass.
Teacher’s Note
Wow Factor-Consideration!
Engage students in a light-hearted competition and give a small certificate or award (like "Best Passer" or "Team MVP") at the end of class to build excitement, confidence, and recognition for effort. Let students nominate or vote for one another to encourage peer encouragement and fair play.
