Objectives

Warm-up Activity: Count and Clap (5 minutes)

1. Introduction: Begin by gathering students in a circle on the carpet.
2. Activity: Lead a group count where the class counts from 1 to 10 out loud. Use a rhythmic clapping pattern to help keep the pace. For example, clap on each number.
3. Extension: If students are comfortable, extend the count to 20 using the same clapping rhythm.

Interactive Activity: Treasure Hunt Counting (10 minutes)

1. Setup: Divide the class into pairs and provide each pair with a set of counting cards and manipulatives.
2. Instructions: Explain that students will "hunt for treasures" by counting out objects to match the number on each card.
3. Task: Call out a number between 1 and 10. Each pair will use their manipulatives to quickly gather the correct amount and place them in a small pile.
4. Sharing: Once all pairs have gathered their objects, count together as a class by pointing and counting each pile chorally.

Group Game: Musical Numbers (5 minutes)

1. Setup: Arrange chairs or cushions in a circle, one for each student. Place a number card under each chair or cushion.
2. Instructions: Explain the rules of the game: The teacher will play music, and while it's playing, students will walk around the circle. When the music stops, they must sit and show the number under their chair.
3. Activity: Begin the music and guide students around the circle. When the music stops, encourage students to find their chairs and read the number. Ask them to form a group based on counting manipulatives equal to their number.
4. Reflection: Quickly review which numbers were shown and counted, reaffirming their understanding of the values.

Closing Activity: Number Line Jump (5 minutes)

1. Setup: Use a number line taped on the classroom floor or on the wall.
2. Instructions: Select a student to stand at the beginning of the number line.
3. Activity: Call out a number between 1 and 10 and ask the selected student to jump to that number on the line. Have the class count aloud together as the student jumps.
4. Repetition: Give several students a turn, and let the rest cheer for their classmates.

Assessment

• Observe each student’s ability to count accurately using the manipulatives.
• Take notes on students who demonstrate confidence and those who may need additional support.
• Ask individual students to verbally share their number during the Musical Numbers game for informal assessment.

Reflection

Encourage students to share what they enjoyed about the activities and ask them to recount something they learned. Prompt students with questions such as, "What was your favorite number to count to today?" or "How did you find the right number of blocks?"
