Lesson Sequence

1. Warm-Up: Counting Together (1 Minute)

• Begin by having students stand in a circle.
• Using a cheerful voice, count aloud together from 1 to 20 and back down to 0. Ask students to clap once for odd numbers and stomp once for even numbers as they count.

2. Story Introduction with Puppet Friend (2 Minutes)

• Introduce a stuffed animal or puppet named "Captain Numbers."
• Create excitement by telling a short story:
  "Captain Numbers is lost and needs our help solving addition and subtraction puzzles to find their way home!"
• Use this storytelling moment to introduce the addition/subtraction problems and emphasize teamwork.

3. Hands-On Practice: Basket Math (3 Minutes)

• Divide students into pairs, giving each pair a mini whiteboard and 20 objects from the basket.
• Call out simple addition/subtraction problems aloud, such as:
  • "If Captain Numbers found 6 coins and then found 4 more coins, how many does he have now?"
  • "Captain Numbers gave away 5 of his 12 snacks. How many snacks does he have left?"
• Students will solve each problem by physically adding or removing objects from their pile while writing down the equation on the whiteboard.
• After each problem, students will raise their whiteboards to share their answers.

4. Number Line Detective Game (2 Minutes)

• Transition to the classroom number line.
• Invite students one at a time to “hop” on an oversized classroom number line to solve a problem. For example:
  • "Start at 8! Captain Numbers moved forward 5 spaces. What number did he end at?" (Addition)
  • "Start at 13! Captain Numbers hopped back 4 spaces. What number did he land on?" (Subtraction)
• The physical hopping reinforces the concept of adding and subtracting with movement and excitement.
